Dinan Cold Air Intake – BMW 230i / 330i / 430i (B48)

OVERVIEW

Built to appeal to as many buyers as possible at an attractive price, the 230i, 330i and 430i arrive with a utilitarian air box surrounded by unfinished-looking braces, a basic panel filter and an intake resonator whose job is to eliminate the turbo and induction noise enthusiasts want to hear. The Dinan carbon fiber intake replaces that system with a semi-open design that flows 58% more air than stock, improving throttle response and removing a potential restriction for owners planning a higher-output build with upgraded turbo and fueling hardware. It also brings a more aggressive carbon fiber appearance and a clear increase in induction sound once the resonator is deleted.

To achieve that flow, Dinan reworked and enlarged the entire lower box rather than just the lid, using as much of the available engine bay space as possible so a 40% larger free-flowing filter could be fitted. A secondary inlet was added to fill the enlarged volume, and Dinan tested a range of opening shapes, locations and sizes to confirm the added inlet would not raise intake air temperatures the way open-element intakes commonly do. The patterned openings in the final box, on the side opposite the engine, added volume to assist the factory snorkel without any rise in turbo inlet temperature across single and multi-gear pulls, constant-speed running and 0-100 mph runs.

Dinan states the extra flow does not produce a meaningful power increase on a stock or lightly modified car; what it does is raise the platform's power ceiling so the intake is not the limiting factor on a more aggressive build. Regardless of build level, the secondary inlets make turbo spool and the blow-off event audible, a clear difference from Dinan's traditional fully sealed systems, and the visible components are carbon fiber for a substantially improved under-hood appearance.
