Dinan Cold Air Intake – BMW M240i / M340i (B58)

OVERVIEW

The M240i and M340i are impressive cars, but the stock intake does not reflect that. From the factory they use a plain air box with a basic panel filter and an intake resonator whose job is to suppress the turbo and induction noises enthusiasts actually want to hear. The Dinan carbon fiber intake replaces that setup with a semi-open design that flows 58% more air than stock, adding top-end power and throttle response while delivering a more aggressive carbon fiber appearance and more induction sound thanks to the deleted resonator.

To reach that flow figure Dinan reworked and enlarged the entire lower box, not just the lid, using as much of the available engine bay space as possible so a 40% larger custom free-flowing filter can be fitted. A secondary inlet was added to fill the enlarged box, and Dinan tested a range of opening shapes, locations and sizes to confirm it would not raise intake temperatures. The patterned openings in the final design sit on the side opposite the engine and provide the extra volume without increasing turbo inlet temperatures, across single and multiple gear pulls, constant speed running and 0-100 mph runs.

With more air entering the system, throttle response improves and Dinan measures maximum gains of +9 WHP and +8 lb-ft. The secondary inlets also make turbo spool and blow-off audible, a clear change from Dinan's traditional fully sealed systems where induction noise is far less noticeable. The outwardly visible parts of the system are finished in carbon fiber, so under-hood appearance improves alongside the performance.
