OVERVIEW

H&R Sport Springs are the best-selling performance street spring for BMW, and 50490 is the set for the E90 3 Series sedan. Swapping the factory springs is the first real step in suspension tuning: the drop of about 1.3 inches at the front and 1.2 inches at the rear lowers the center of gravity, cuts body roll and gives the car better handling and chassis balance along with a cleaner, more aggressive stance.

The rate is progressive and roughly 10–20% firmer than stock, so the spring stays comfortable in normal driving and stiffens as it compresses to keep the chassis composed when pushed. Reduced ride height also trims the car's wind-resistance profile.

H&R builds every spring in-house in Germany. The wire is a special 54SiCr6 spring steel, cold-wound and then shot-peened to increase service life by more than 200%, so the spring resists settling and sagging over time. Each spring is 100% tested before it leaves H&R's ISO 9001-certified plant, and the range carries TÜV approval.

TECH RESOURCES

Required Extras

  • Four-wheel alignment. H&R requires the alignment to be checked and reset after installation. Budget for this before ordering.
  • Professional installation. H&R states its springs and suspensions should be installed by professional suspension mechanics only.
  • Spring compressor. A spring-only kit requires the struts to be disassembled, which needs a proper coil-spring compressor. Installer-supplied.
  • Bump-stop trimming. Check the trim chart in the H&R Technical Information Sheet linked below for this kit number before assembly.
  • Confirm your car is not fitted with EDC / adaptive dampers. H&R does not list this kit for EDC-equipped cars.
  • Optional: matched sport-valved dampers. The springs work with healthy factory dampers, but a lowered car holds up better on a damper valved for the shorter spring.
  • Optional: replace worn strut mounts, bump stops and dust boots while the struts are apart.

Installation

  • H&R Technical Information Sheet (PDF) — ride-height measurement procedure, spring orientation and markings, bump-stop trim chart by kit number, and post-installation alignment requirements.
  • H&R technical FAQ and installation guidance (hrsprings.com) — manufacturer installation questions and answers.
  • H&R does not publish a vehicle-specific printed installation manual for this kit; installation follows the factory BMW suspension service procedure. Contact Speed Logic if you need help sourcing the procedure.
