Mishimoto Heat Exchanger MMHE-F80-15 – BMW M3 / M4 (F80 / F82)

OVERVIEW

Air-to-water intercooling transfers heat out of the charge air more efficiently than a conventional front-mount setup, but it needs a heat exchanger at the front of the car to dump that heat. The S55 in the F8X M cars packs a serious punch thanks to its A2W system, and while BMW's engineers laid solid foundations, Mishimoto saw room to improve on the factory heat exchanger.

Mishimoto started by eliminating the plastic components, replacing the end tanks and the inlet and outlet ports with durable aluminum. The dual-pass flow through the core was retained for maximum cooling while the core was expanded into the available space: a 42 mm thick core, extended 150 mm in height, for a 60% increase in core volume and a 180% increase in fin surface area. Intercooler coolant capacity rises by 0.6 gallons. The result is a 10°F drop in global intercooling temperatures over the stock unit.

Because the heat exchanger sits front and center in the M3 and M4's cooling stack it is exposed to road debris, so Mishimoto supplies a stainless-steel stone guard to protect the fins. A variable fin pitch across the lower 12 rows of the core keeps airflow moving to DCT-equipped cars' transmission cooler. The heat exchanger carries the Mishimoto Lifetime Warranty.

TECH RESOURCES

Additional Parts Required

• Coolant. Mishimoto's installation guide requires coolant to refill the intercooler circuit at the end of the job; it is not supplied with the heat exchanger. Speed Logic does not currently stock it — source BMW-specification coolant from your dealer or parts supplier.
• A drain bucket for the coolant released when the auxiliary cooler is disconnected, plus installer-supplied hand tools.
