OVERVIEW

The SPEC Stage 3 PLUS is the flagship stage for a high-powered street or race car that still needs a manageable, friendly engagement. It uses a carbon semi-metallic full-faced material that SPEC rates for unparalleled life, friction co-efficient and drivability in one package. SPEC recommends it for street, drag, drift, autocross, road racing, pulling and rally use.

This is the non-SAC version, built to run on a single mass flywheel. It is not compatible with the OEM dual mass flywheel and it is not compatible with MFactory flywheels. SPEC notes a single mass flywheel is required on cars making in excess of 500 WHP / 500 lb-ft.

Additional Parts Required

• SPEC single mass flywheel — REQUIRED. Choose by production date: SPEC 8-bolt steel SMFW SB53S-2 (2007 – 1/2009), SPEC 8-bolt aluminum SMFW SB53A-2 (2007 – 1/2009), SPEC 6-bolt steel SMFW SB53S-3 (2/2009 on), SPEC 6-bolt aluminum SMFW SB53A-3 (2/2009 on); for N55 cars, SPEC steel SMFW SB55S-2 or SPEC aluminum SMFW SB55A-2.
• Pilot bearing, release bearing and alignment tool are included in the kit.
• Installer-supplied: transmission jack, new flywheel-to-crank bolts and BMW-specification transmission oil if the transmission is drained.
• When switching to a single mass flywheel some flywheel chatter or rattle is to be expected.

Installation

• SPEC does not publish a downloadable installation PDF for this application — follow the printed installation and break-in instructions supplied with the kit.
• Installation requires removal of the transmission and should be carried out by a qualified technician. Inspect the pilot bearing bore, clutch fork, release-bearing guide sleeve and slave cylinder while the transmission is out.
• Bed the clutch in with light, gradual engagements before applying full load.

Notes

• N54 flywheel bolt pattern changes with production date — 8-bolt through 1/2009 and 6-bolt from 2/2009. Confirm your production date with Speed Logic before ordering.
• N55 cars use SPEC's N55 single mass flywheel (SB55S-2 steel or SB55A-2 aluminum) — the "2011-2012 N55 6 Bolt" option on this listing covers them. SPEC's own catalog lists the N55 cars and the 1M under the N55-specific SB553F-2 kit.
• 1M Coupe: not a SB533F-2 application — the correct 1M part is SB553F-2.
• Manual-transmission cars only.
• Flywheel part numbers by application: SPEC flywheel 8-bolt (2007 – 1/2009 production): SB53S-2 steel or SB53A-2 aluminum; SPEC flywheel 6-bolt (2/2009 production on): SB53S-3 steel or SB53A-3 aluminum; SPEC flywheel N55: SB55S-2 steel or SB55A-2 aluminum.
