BMW B58 Stage Build Guide: M240i, 340i, 440i & Supra

The BMW B58 is one of the most tuner-friendly engines BMW has ever built. Whether it lives in your M240i, 340i, 440i, or the Toyota GR Supra, the closed-deck 3.0L single-turbo inline-six responds hard to bolt-ons and holds up to serious power on the stock block. This guide walks you through a proven, stage-by-stage build path — what to add first, what each stage needs to run safely, and which parts we stock to get you there.

Everything below links to the matching Speed Logic collections so you can see current pricing and fitment for your exact chassis.

First, Know Your B58 Variant

"B58" covers a few generations. Early cars (roughly 2016–2018 F-chassis 340i/440i and M240i) use the B58B30M0. Later G-chassis cars and the A90 Supra use the revised B58B30M1/TU, which has a more efficient turbo, updated cooling, and slightly different fueling. The tuning path is the same, but always confirm parts by chassis and year before buying — that is what the fitment tables on each listing are for.

The B58 Stage Build Path at a Glance

Stage What you add What it needs Typical goal
Stage 1 Flash tune only 93 octane or ethanol blend, healthy fuel system Biggest gain per dollar — wakes the whole engine up
Stage 2 Intake + charge pipe + downpipe/exhaust Stage 2 tune to match the hardware More airflow in and out, quicker spool
Stage 2+ Upgraded intercooler + cooling Consistent intake temps for repeat pulls Hold power on hot days and back-to-back runs
Stage 3 Fueling (port injection / HPFP) + ethanol Flex-fuel capable tune Support higher boost and E-blends safely
Big power Upgraded turbo + supporting mods Full fuel + cooling + clutch/trans work 500+ whp territory

You do not have to hit every stage. Most street cars land beautifully at Stage 2 with cooling. The point of staging is that each step is safe and complete on its own.

Stage 1 — The Tune (Start Here)

Nothing else you bolt on comes close to the value of a flash tune on the B58. A recalibration alone unlocks a large jump in power and torque because the factory tune leaves a lot on the table for emissions and worldwide fuel-quality margins. On the B58, the two most popular flashing platforms are MHD Flasher and Bootmod3 — both let you flash from your phone or laptop and switch between octane maps. Not sure which to pick? See our tune comparison guide.

What Stage 1 needs to be done right: good fuel (93 octane, or an ethanol blend if your tuner supports it), fresh plugs, and a car in good mechanical health. That is it. Browse all B58 tuning options in the B58 Tuning collection.

Stage 2 — Breathe Better

Once the tune is proven, the next gains come from moving more air. Three bolt-ons make up a classic Stage 2:

  • Downpipe / exhaust. A high-flow catted or catless downpipe frees up exhaust flow and spool. See the B58 Exhaust collection and our broader Exhaust & Downpipes collection. (New to catted vs catless? Read our downpipe explainer before you choose.)
  • Charge pipe. The factory plastic charge pipe is a known weak point under boost — an aluminum B58 charge pipe is cheap insurance and improves throttle response.
  • Intake. A performance B58 intake feeds the turbo more air and sharpens sound.

Whenever you add airflow hardware, update to a Stage 2 tune so the calibration matches what the engine is now doing. Hardware and tune are a pair — one without the other leaves gains (and sometimes safety margin) on the table.

Stage 2+ — Cooling Is Free Power

The B58 makes great power but heat-soaks on repeat runs, especially in warm climates. An upgraded intercooler and cooling package keeps intake air temps down so your tune can hold timing and boost instead of pulling power to protect itself. This is one of the most underrated upgrades on the platform. Shop the B58 Cooling collection for intercoolers, radiators, and heat exchangers.

Stage 3 — Fueling for Bigger Power and Ethanol

The B58 runs a direct-injection-only fuel system from the factory, and at higher power levels — particularly on ethanol blends — that system becomes the limit. Adding port injection or upgrading the high-pressure fuel pump gives the tune the fuel headroom it needs. This is the gateway to flex-fuel and to reliable big-boost setups. See the B58 Fueling collection.

Going for Big Power

The stock B58 block and internals are strong, and many owners chase 500+ whp with an upgraded turbo, full fueling, and serious cooling. At that level you also need to think about the drivetrain — clutch, transmission, and axles all become part of the conversation. If that is your goal, talk to us first so we can spec a combination that works together rather than buying piecemeal.

Don't Forget the Chassis

Power is only half of a fast car. Once the engine is sorted, suspension transforms how the car feels and puts the power down. B58 owners have great options from KW, H&R, and Bilstein — from a simple lowering-spring drop to full coilovers. See what fits in the B58 Suspension collection, and read our coilover buying guide to pick the right setup.

Recommended First Three Purchases

If you are starting today and want the best bang for your money in order:

  • 1. Flash tune — MHD or Bootmod3. Biggest single gain.
  • 2. Charge pipe — cheap, prevents a common failure, improves response.
  • 3. Downpipe + Stage 2 tune — the airflow upgrade that unlocks the next level.

From there, add cooling, then fueling if you plan to push further. Build in stages, tune to match, and the B58 will reward you.

Many performance parts described here — including downpipes, tunes, and turbo upgrades — are intended for closed-course competition or off-road use and may not be legal for use on pollution-controlled vehicles on public roads. Check your local and state emissions regulations before purchase. Power figures vary with fuel, supporting modifications, and tuning; ranges are typical and not guaranteed.
