A tune is the best-value modification you can make to a turbocharged BMW or Toyota Supra — it wakes up power and torque the factory left on the table, and it is the foundation every other bolt-on builds on. But once you decide to tune, you hit the big question: JB4, Bootmod3, MHD, or EcuTek? These are the four most popular platforms for BMW's turbo engines and the B58 Supra, and they work in different ways. This guide explains how each one operates, their pros and cons, and which fits your goals.
The Key Difference: Piggyback vs. Flash
Before comparing brands, understand the two approaches:
- Piggyback (JB4). A piggyback device plugs in between the car's sensors and the factory computer (DME), adjusting the signals it sees to make more boost and power. The factory tune stays in place; the device works alongside it.
- Flash tune (Bootmod3, MHD, and EcuTek). A flash rewrites the factory DME software itself. It changes the engine's actual calibration — fueling, timing, boost targets — at the source.
Neither approach is universally "better." They suit different owners, and some people even run a flash and a piggyback together. Here is how the four stack up.
JB4 by Burger Motorsports — The Plug-and-play Piggyback
The JB4 is the most popular piggyback for BMW. It installs by plugging into sensor connectors — no laptop flashing, no rewriting the DME — and it is easy to remove and take with you if you sell the car. It offers switchable maps, and with add-ons it can support gauges, boost-by-gear, and more.
Best for: owners who want strong gains with a reversible, no-flash install; people who like tinkering with add-ons; anyone who values being able to return the car fully to stock by unplugging it. Shop Burger Motorsports / JB4.
- Pros: No DME flashing, easy install and removal, portable between cars, feature-rich with accessories.
- Cons: Works alongside the factory tune rather than optimizing it directly; the most refined results often come from combining it with a back-end flash.
Bootmod3 (BM3) — The Flash Tune with an App-first Experience
Bootmod3 is a full DME flash with a polished phone and desktop app. You flash maps over Bluetooth/OBD, switch between octane and ethanol maps, log your car, and many owners run custom tuner support through it. Because it rewrites the DME, it optimizes the whole calibration rather than working around it, and it is a favorite on the S55 and B58.
Best for: owners who want the cleanest, most integrated flash experience and a strong ecosystem for off-the-shelf and custom tuning. Shop Bootmod3.
- Pros: Full DME optimization, excellent app, strong map and custom-tune support, wide engine coverage.
- Cons: It is a flash — a tune sits on your DME (relevant to some warranty and resale considerations); typically a one-DME license.
MHD Flasher — The Value Flash Powerhouse
MHD is the other dominant flash platform, hugely popular for its value and its deep logging and custom-tune capability. Like Bootmod3 it rewrites the DME and flashes from your phone with switchable maps. MHD has especially strong roots on the N54, N55, S55, and B58 engines, and is a favorite of the custom-tuning community.
Best for: owners who want a proven flash at a great price with excellent logging and access to a large custom-tuner network. Shop MHD Flasher.
- Pros: Great value, powerful logging, strong custom-tune support, broad engine coverage.
- Cons: It is a flash (same warranty/resale note as above); the interface is functional rather than flashy.
EcuTek — The Pro-tuner Platform and Supra Favorite
EcuTek is a professional-grade ECU tuning platform delivered largely through a network of trained tuners. Tunes are flashed with an EcuTek Bluetooth dongle and phone app, and the platform is best known for its deep RaceROM feature set — flat-foot shifting, launch control, map switching, flex-fuel logic and more — plus excellent logging. It is enormously popular in the Toyota GR Supra community and is also used on many BMW B-series and S-series engines.
One important note: later BMW and Toyota DMEs ship locked, and EcuTek (like other flash platforms) needs the ECU unlocked before it can write to it. We offer that as a service — see our ECU Unlock Service. EcuTek tunes are not sold as an off-the-shelf product in our store — contact us and we will point you to the right EcuTek setup for your car. Supra owners can browse other tuning options in the Supra Tuning collection, and BMW B58 owners in the B58 Tuning collection.
Best for: owners who want a professionally-backed custom tune with the richest feature set, and Supra owners in particular.
- Pros: Powerful RaceROM features, strong pro-tuner network, excellent logging, deep Supra and BMW support.
- Cons: Usually goes through a tuner rather than fully self-serve; locked DMEs must be unlocked first; it is a flash (same warranty/resale note as above).

Which Should You Choose?
- Want the simplest, fully reversible option? Go JB4.
- Want the most polished flash experience and ecosystem? Go Bootmod3.
- Want a proven flash with the best value and logging? Go MHD.
- Own a Supra, or want a pro-tuner-backed flash with the RaceROM feature set? Look at EcuTek — ask us about setting it up.
All four make great power and all four are widely trusted. Your decision comes down to flash vs. no-flash, budget, whether you want a self-serve app or a pro-tuner relationship, and how deep you want to go with custom tuning. Whichever you pick, a tune is step one — pair it with the airflow and cooling upgrades in our engine-specific build guides to keep climbing: N54, N55, B58, S55, S58, and GR Supra.

Engine tuning is intended for closed-course competition or off-road use and may not be legal for use on pollution-controlled vehicles on public roads; check your local and state emissions regulations before purchase. Tuning increases stress on engine and drivetrain components. A tune on the DME may affect factory warranty coverage and resale. Always run appropriate fuel and supporting modifications for your chosen maps.
