OVERVIEW

The Dinan Turbo Inlets are an easy-to-install bolt-on upgrade that removes the single largest obstacle in the factory intake system: the turbocharger inlets themselves. From the factory the plastic inlets neck down dramatically at the turbochargers, stifling flow and raising the pre-turbine pressure ratio so the turbos work harder than they need to.

Dinan’s replacements are built from gloss UV-coated 2×2 carbon fiber with an aluminum adapter where the carbon meets the stock turbocharger, and they use the factory locking system — installation is announced by an audible click when the connection is secure. The organic, unorthodox shape exists to deliver the largest possible cross-sectional area from filter to turbo: roughly 200% more volume than stock, 105 cubic inches per side versus 35. On a car with the factory airboxes that is worth average gains of 11 WHP and 13 WTQ from 2000 RPM to redline, and the whole intake tract works better still when paired with the Dinan Cold Air Intake.

Instrumented engine testing showed benefits beyond the dyno figures. The inlets let the turbocharger run at a lower pressure ratio and therefore more efficiently, which translates to lower pre-turbine backpressure, lower turbo shaft speeds, lower compressor discharge temperatures and headroom for higher boost pressure.

  • Dinan warranty: on a vehicle still covered by the BMW new-car limited warranty (4 years/50,000 miles), Dinan products are warranted for the remaining term of that warranty; otherwise Dinan Performance Products carry a 2-year, unlimited-mileage warranty from the date of original purchase. Wear and maintenance items — friction materials, filters, fluids, spark plugs, drive belts and bulbs — are excluded.

TECH RESOURCES

Additional Parts Required

  • None. Dinan specifies no additional hardware for this part — the inlets bolt to the factory airboxes and lock into the stock turbocharger fittings.
  • Optional pairing: the Dinan Cold Air Intake (D760-0049). Dinan states the efficiency of the whole intake system is maximized when the inlets are run with its cold air intake.
  • Installer-supplied tools: standard hand tools; no cutting or drilling of factory parts is required.
