SPEC Aluminum Billet Flywheel SBN20A – BMW N20 / N26

OVERVIEW

The factory flywheel on N20/N26 cars is a dual-mass unit — two plates with a spring damper between them, designed to keep the driveline quiet. It does that job well on a stock car, but a tuned four-cylinder puts torque through the damper that it was never rated for, and a failed DMF is a transmission-out repair in its own right.

A SPEC billet single-mass aluminum flywheel replaces it with one solid piece. Nothing inside can wear out, and it cuts rotating mass — which on a 2.0-liter four is very noticeable: the engine picks up faster, settles faster between shifts, and the car feels considerably more alert.

PARTS INCLUDED

• One SPEC billet aluminum flywheel with mounting hardware, as supplied by SPEC Clutch. Clutch kit is not included.

TECH RESOURCES

Additional Parts Required

• A SPEC N20 / N26 clutch kit (sold separately) — this flywheel is required for the SPEC Extreme Load (-2) clutch kits and is used with the standard kits where a single-mass flywheel is wanted.
• Flywheel bolts — BMW flywheel bolts are single-use. Replace them.
• Clutch slave and master cylinder — worth replacing while the transmission is out.
• Transmission fluid — the transmission has to come out, so plan on a fluid change.

Installation

• SPEC does not publish installation instructions for its BMW flywheels. Fitting follows the standard BMW flywheel and clutch replacement procedure for the chassis — contact Speed Logic if you need guidance on the job or a shop recommendation.

Notes

• N20/N26 only. This flywheel fits N20 and N26 engines. B46/B48-engined cars take a different SPEC flywheel.
• A single-mass flywheel removes the OE dual-mass damper. Expect more gear rattle at idle and on overrun. This is normal and is not a fault.
• Aluminum is lighter than steel but transmits more noise and makes smooth low-speed starts harder.
• Manual-transmission cars only.
• Price is for the flywheel only; clutch, labor and fluids are not included.
