BMW S58 Build Guide: G80 M3 & G82 M4

The BMW S58 is the twin-turbo 3.0L inline-six behind the G80 M3, G82 M4, and the X3 M / X4 M. It is the most powerful and most over-built version of BMW's modern six — a closed-deck block, forged crank, and twin mono-scroll turbos that leave the factory with serious output and even more locked away by the stock tune. The result is a platform where a simple tune produces huge, safe gains and the stock engine holds big power. This guide lays out a proven stage-by-stage path and the parts we stock for each step.

Know Your S58 Car

The S58 powers the G80 M3, G82/G83 M4, and the F97 X3 M / F98 X4 M (2020+ model years in the US). It shares much of its architecture with the B58 but is built for far more power, with upgraded internals and cooling. One key detail for tuning: the S58 uses a locked DME, so flashing requires an ECU unlock — more on that below.

The S58 Stage Build Path at a Glance

Stage What you add What it needs Typical goal
Stage 1 Flash tune ECU unlock, good fuel Largest gain per dollar
Stage 2 Downpipes + intake Stage 2 tune to match More flow, better sound
Stage 2+ Cooling upgrades Consistent intake temps Hold power on track
Stage 3 Fueling / port injection + ethanol Flex-fuel capable tune Support higher boost safely
Big power Upgraded turbos + supporting mods Full fuel, cooling, drivetrain 700+ whp territory

Stage 1 — The Tune (Start Here)

The S58 responds enormously to a flash tune — the factory calibration is conservative, and a recalibration alone delivers a large jump in power and torque along with sharper throttle and transmission behavior. Popular platforms include Bootmod3 and MHD Flasher; see our tune comparison guide for the full breakdown.

Important: the S58's DME is locked from the factory, so it must be unlocked before it can be flashed. We handle that in-house with our ECU Unlock Service, which covers the S58. Then browse tuning in the S58 Tuning collection.

Stage 2 — Free up the Airflow

With the tune proven, add airflow:

Add a Stage 2 tune whenever you change airflow hardware so the calibration matches the new setup.

Match parts to your exact car.Use each listing's Vehicle Applications table to confirm chassis, engine, and year — or ask us and we will verify it for you.

Stage 2+ — Cooling Holds the Power

The S58 is a track weapon, and heat management is what lets it perform lap after lap. Upgraded cooling keeps intake and coolant temps in check so the tune can hold timing and boost instead of pulling power. If you see track time, prioritize cooling early. Shop the S58 Cooling collection.

Stage 3 — Fueling for Ethanol and Big Boost

The S58 runs direct injection from the factory, and at higher power — especially on ethanol blends — fueling becomes the limit. Adding port injection unlocks flex-fuel capability and gives the tune headroom for higher boost. This is the step that turns a strong street car into a serious build.

Going for Big Power

The S58 bottom end is genuinely stout, and with upgraded turbos and full supporting mods, 700+ whp is within reach for many builds on the stock block. At that level the drivetrain, cooling, and fueling all have to keep pace. We stock S58 transmission upgrades for exactly this reason, and an xHP transmission tune raises the factory torque limits so the gearbox can use the power. If big power is the goal, talk to us so we can spec a package that works as a system.

Don't Forget the Chassis

These are flagship M cars; the chassis deserves as much attention as the engine. Whether you want a subtle drop or a track-ready corner-balanced setup, we stock KW, H&R, and Bilstein. See what fits in the S58 Suspension collection, and read our coilover buying guide to choose.

Recommended First Three Purchases

  • 1. ECU unlock + flash tune — Bootmod3 or MHD. Biggest instant gain.
  • 2. Downpipes + Stage 2 tune — the classic airflow unlock.
  • 3. Cooling — especially if you touch a track.

Then add fueling if you want ethanol and bigger boost. Build in stages, tune to match, and the S58 becomes one of the most capable fast BMWs on the road or track.

Many parts described here — downpipes, tunes, and turbo upgrades — are intended for closed-course competition or off-road use and may not be legal for use on pollution-controlled vehicles on public roads. Check your local and state emissions regulations before purchase. Power figures vary with fuel, supporting modifications, and tuning; ranges are typical and not guaranteed. Always confirm fitment for your exact chassis, engine, and year.
