Most BMW owners think of tuning as an engine job — more boost, more power, a flash on the DME. But if your car has a ZF automatic or an M DCT, there is a second computer worth tuning: the one that controls your gearbox. That is what an xHP transmission tune does. It reprograms the transmission control unit (TCU) to shift faster, firmer, and smarter, and it is one of the most transformative upgrades you can make to how a modern BMW or Toyota Supra actually drives. Here is what it does, what it works on, and why it pairs so well with an engine tune.

Transmission Tune vs. Engine Tune — What's the Difference?
Your car runs two separate calibrations. The engine is controlled by the DME (the ECU), which flash platforms like Bootmod3, MHD, and EcuTek rewrite to make more power (see our tune comparison guide). The transmission is controlled by its own TCU, which decides how and when the gearbox shifts, how firm each shift is, and how much torque it will let through.
An engine tune makes more power. A transmission tune changes how that power is delivered. xHP is a TCU flash — it does not touch your engine calibration at all. That is why the two are complementary rather than competing: one adds the power, the other makes the gearbox keep up with it.
What an xHP Tune Actually Changes
The factory transmission programming is tuned for smoothness, fuel economy, and drivetrain longevity across a worldwide fleet — which means it is deliberately soft and conservative. xHP rewrites that behavior. The headline changes owners feel immediately:
- Faster, firmer shifts. Gear changes happen quicker and with authority instead of the soft, slurred factory feel.
- Smarter shift logic. The transmission holds gears when you want it to and stops hunting or upshifting too early when you are driving hard.
- Raised or removed torque limiters. The factory TCU caps torque in certain gears to protect the driveline; this is a real ceiling once you add engine power, and xHP lets you raise it so your engine tune can actually deliver.
- Launch control. Built-in launch control for consistent, repeatable starts.
- Throttle blips on downshifts. Rev-matched downshifts for a sharper, more engaging feel.
- A Shiftpoint Editor. Tailor exactly where and how the transmission shifts to your taste.

Which Transmissions Are Compatible?
xHP is organized by transmission type rather than by a single vehicle chart, because compatibility follows the gearbox. It supports:
- ZF 6-Speed Automatic (6HP) — older N54/N55-era automatics and more.
- 7-Speed M DCT (Getrag dual-clutch) — the dual-clutch found in many M cars.
- ZF 8-Speed Automatic (8HP) — F-Series — the widely used 8-speed in F-chassis BMWs.
- ZF 8-Speed Automatic (8HP) — G-Series & Toyota GR Supra — the current-generation 8-speed, including the A90 Supra.
One important nuance: some M models sit on a G-series-based platform even while still wearing an F-chassis code (for example the F90 M5 and the F97/F98 X3 M / X4 M). Those use the G-series license. Because compatibility is VIN-specific, the surest way to confirm your exact fitment is to reach out with your VIN — we will verify it for you.
Does It Pair With an Engine Tune?
Absolutely — that is the ideal setup. An engine tune from Bootmod3, MHD, or EcuTek adds the power; xHP makes the transmission shift hard enough and allow enough torque to use it. On automatic cars especially, the combination of an ECU flash plus an xHP transmission tune is what makes a build feel genuinely fast rather than just powerful on paper. Supra owners can see engine-side options in the Supra Tuning collection and our GR Supra build guide, and if you are chasing serious power, our Supra transmission upgrades and S58 transmission upgrades address the hardware side.
Reversible, VIN-Locked, and Installed In-House
An xHP license is tied to your car's VIN and comes with the performance maps included. Once licensed you can reflash and switch maps as often as you like, and you can return the transmission to its factory program at any time — it is fully reversible. We flash xHP in-house by appointment, so you do not need to source adapters or figure out the software yourself. Book a slot, we handle the flash, and you drive out with a transformed gearbox.
Is It Worth It?
If you have an automatic BMW or a GR Supra and you have already tuned the engine — or you are simply tired of soft, lazy factory shifts — a transmission tune is one of the biggest "feel" upgrades per dollar you can make. It sharpens the whole driving experience, removes a real torque ceiling on tuned cars, and is completely reversible if you ever want to go back. For many owners it is the mod they wish they had done first.
Ready to firm up your shifts? Visit our xHP Transmission Tune page, or get in touch with your VIN and we will confirm the right license for your car.
xHP is a transmission control unit (TCU) flash and does not modify your engine calibration. Compatibility is transmission- and VIN-specific; always confirm the correct license for your exact vehicle before purchase. Tuning increases stress on drivetrain components, and modifications may affect factory warranty coverage. xHP and xHP Flashtool are products of xAutomotive; Speed Logic is an installing dealer.
