The A90 Toyota GR Supra shares its heart with BMW: the 3.0L models run the same B58 single-turbo inline-six family found in the M240i, 340i, and 440i. That is great news for tuners — the B58 is one of the most responsive, over-built turbo engines on the market, and the Supra scene has built a deep aftermarket around it. A simple tune wakes the car up dramatically, and the stock engine holds serious power. This guide lays out a proven stage-by-stage path and the parts we stock for each step.

Know Your Supra
The GR Supra 3.0 (2020+) uses the B58; the 2.0 models use the B48 four-cylinder. This guide focuses on the 3.0 B58 cars, which make up the bulk of the tuning scene. Two things to know going in: the Supra launched with the ZF 8-speed automatic only, and a 6-speed manual was added for the 2023 model year; and its DME is locked — so flashing requires an ECU unlock, covered below.
The Supra (B58) Stage Build Path at a Glance
| Stage | What you add | What it needs | Typical goal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stage 1 | Flash tune | ECU unlock, good fuel | Biggest gain per dollar |
| Stage 2 | Intake + charge pipe + downpipe/exhaust | Stage 2 tune to match | More airflow, quicker spool |
| Stage 2+ | Upgraded intercooler + cooling | Consistent intake temps | Hold power on hot days / track |
| Stage 3 | Fueling (port injection) + ethanol | Flex-fuel capable tune | Support higher boost safely |
| Big power | Upgraded turbo + supporting mods | Full fuel, cooling, trans | 600+ whp territory |
Stage 1 — The Tune (Start Here)
Nothing else comes close to the value of a tune on the Supra. The factory calibration is conservative, and a recalibration alone unlocks a large jump in power and torque and sharpens the throttle and transmission. The Supra community leans heavily on EcuTek, MHD, and Bootmod3 — EcuTek in particular is a Supra favorite for its RaceROM feature set (ask us about EcuTek setups). See our tune comparison guide for the full breakdown.
Important: the Supra's DME is locked from the factory, so it must be unlocked before it can be flashed. We handle that in-house with our ECU Unlock Service. Then browse tuning in the Supra Tuning collection.
Stage 2 — Breathe Better
Once the tune is proven, add airflow:
- Downpipe / exhaust. A high-flow catted or catless downpipe frees exhaust flow and spool. See the Supra Exhaust collection and our full Exhaust & Downpipes collection. New to catted vs catless? Read our downpipe explainer first.
- Charge pipe. The factory plastic charge pipe is a known weak point under boost — an aluminum Supra charge pipe is cheap insurance and improves throttle response.
- Intake. A performance Supra intake feeds the turbo more air and sharpens sound.
Add a Stage 2 tune whenever you change airflow hardware so the calibration matches the new setup.
Stage 2+ — Cooling Is Free Power
The Supra's B58 makes great power but heat-soaks on repeat runs, especially in warm climates or at the track. An upgraded intercooler and cooling package keeps intake temps down so the tune can hold timing and boost instead of pulling power to protect itself — one of the most valuable upgrades on the platform. Shop the Supra Cooling collection.
Stage 3 — Fueling for Ethanol and Big Boost
The B58 runs direct injection only from the factory, and at higher power — particularly on ethanol blends — fueling becomes the limit. Adding port injection or a flex-fuel setup gives the tune the headroom it needs and unlocks E-blends, which the Supra platform loves. This is the gateway to reliable big-boost setups.
Going for Big Power
The stock B58 block is strong, and Supra owners routinely chase 600+ whp with an upgraded turbo, full fueling, and serious cooling. On automatic cars the ZF 8-speed becomes part of the conversation at high power — we stock Supra transmission upgrades and Supra turbo kits for exactly this, and an xHP transmission tune raises the factory torque limits. If big power is the goal, talk to us so we can spec a combination that works together.
Don't Forget the Chassis
The Supra is a fantastic-handling car and gets even better with the right suspension. Whether you want a clean drop or a track-ready setup, we stock KW, H&R, and Bilstein. See what fits in the Supra Suspension collection, and read our coilover buying guide to pick the right setup.
Recommended First Three Purchases
- 1. ECU unlock + flash tune — MHD, Bootmod3, or EcuTek. Biggest single gain.
- 2. Charge pipe — cheap, prevents a common failure, improves response.
- 3. Downpipe + Stage 2 tune — the airflow upgrade that unlocks the next level.
Then cooling, then fueling if you plan to push further. Build in stages, tune to match, and the GR Supra rewards every step.

Many parts described here — downpipes, tunes, and turbo upgrades — are intended for closed-course competition or off-road use and may not be legal for use on pollution-controlled vehicles on public roads. Check your local and state emissions regulations before purchase. Power figures vary with fuel, supporting modifications, and tuning; ranges are typical and not guaranteed. Always confirm fitment for your exact model, engine, and year.
